Despite the ban, it is estimated that more than several tons of have been stocked in India, and now we are seeing a rise in the smuggling of this toxic garlic.

It is reportedly being smuggled through Nepal and Bangladesh. Its prices have increased at home. The prices in India have almost doubled since November last year.

China is actually the world’s leading producer. But after the Wuhan Virus pandemic, there has been an increase in the demand for Indian garlic. Many countries are concerned about the quality of garlic coming from China. India exported more than tons in the year. The total valuation was around crores of rupees.

Why did the U.S. and European Union banned?

Senators in the US are campaigning to ban Chinese garlic. In December 2023, an American Senator named Rick Scott wrote a letter to the US Commerce Secretary.

Scott said that Chinese garlic is a threat to national security, and I am quoting again, Food Safety and Security is an existential emergency that poses a serious threat to our national security, public health, and economic prosperity.

Many countries have banned the import of this due to health concerns. The European Union has strict rules that if it does not meet their safety standards, then it will not be imported into any European country.

Effect of Chinese garlic.

Most of the harmful chemicals, including pesticides and fertilizers, are used in the cultivation of this garlic. Many reports say that harmful substances like sulfates, lead, and bleaching are used to make this look white and attractive.

But these chemicals are dangerous for health, and they can also cause long-term problems in human health. Gastrointestinal, allergies, and many other side effects. Many studies have shown that this may contain traces of metals like cadmium and arsenic, which can cause serious health problems like kidney damage and cancer over time.
