You are going to read about six hidden ways in which grocery stores or food marts scam you. Keep reading because you are about to learn something amazing.

It is scientifically proven that when you go shopping at a food mart, you stay there for a long time. Because really, who has ever experienced going to a store to buy one item they always come out with ten. This is called the food mart scam.

How does Food Mart deceive us?

This is because from the very beginning, the entrance is meant to fool you with smells. When you enter, they often place a bakery so that you can feel hungry with the mouthwatering smell of freshly baked bread, coffee, or roasted chicken.

And you know, what happens when you are hungry? You end up spending more money at the store because your brain thinks you should buy more food. Some food marts even use scent machines to produce these smells.

And the aroma of CAKE, CHOCOLATE, and PASTRIES comes out through the air conditioning, and if that store does not have a bakery, then definitely there will be a section of fresh fruits or flowers at the entrance, which will give you the illusion of healthiness.

Shelf placement tricks

Even the shelves, cards, and music are ready to bait you. If you want to save some money, a tip is to never look at the middle shelves at eye level in a supermarket, because that’s where grocers keep the most expensive products; they know it’s the first shelf you’ll see.

Instead, look on the bottom or top shelves where they usually keep the cheaper items. And protect your children, too, because they do the same trick and keep the expensive items at child-eye level.

The soothing music often played in supermarkets will make you calmer, and therefore you will walk slower inside the store to get more purchases done. And finally, pay attention to how big your cart is, because researchers found that people who used a larger cart spent 40% more in the store.

Entrance & Exit

Supermarkets are designed like mazes to confuse you. Have you noticed that the entrance is always far from the exit? This forces you to check out a bigger, bigger shelf of items on the way in, even if you only planned to buy a few. This explains why an estimated 51% of items purchased at a supermarket are unplanned.

End Caps

Do you know those shelves on the counter of every store? They’re called end caps, full of candies, chewing gum, sodas, etc., that you’ll probably add to your cart on impulse. Consumers are definitely being scammed by food marts.

75% of honey sold in stores is allegedly pollen-free, so it’s not really honey. It’s got to be fake. And that expensive oil you buy is probably partially a fraud as well, since 80% of oil marketed as extra virgin is actually adulterated.

Dark Side of Organic Labeling

As for many other organic products, a report in 2017 revealed that 36 million ton shipments of soybeans were suddenly labeled organic when in fact they were full of pesticides and chemicals. Some stores cheat with their product labels and packaging.

So-called cage-free eggs may actually be eggs produced in factories, but they are tagged that way so they can be sold at higher prices.

Some stores mark packaged meat as heavier than its actual weight because they include the weight of packaging or add ice. And they even spray water on their fresh products, not only to make them look freshly picked but also because the water increases their weight and price.

How Supermarkets Use Your Phone No

Did you know that when you give your phone number at the billing counter your supermarket gets access to your personal data and suddenly this big company has all your information and knows what you eat every week and where you spend your money.

Now that we know all this about our favorite supermarkets, remember to always try something new and rest assured that your money will be spent on things you really need and are beneficial. So avoid getting scammed by food marts.
